I can tell you the exact moment I became a Seattle Seahawks fan.
I was taking home economics in the 7th grade at and we had to sew something. It was the fall, and my brother Tim’s birthday was coming up in January. As I perused the catalog of patterns our teacher provided, my eyes stopped on a football helmet pillow.
Now, I’m not talking about a square pillow with a football helmet on it. I’m talking about a pillow shaped like a football helmet. The pattern was just plain, but being the creative indvidual and great sister that I am, I decided to personalize it and make it a Seattle Seahawks football helmet pillow.
This was easier said than done, however, since images of the Seahawks logo in Spokane in 1985 were not easily available to a pre-teen girl. So what did I do? Yep, I sat in my living room copying the blue and green hawk head logo from a broadcast of Monday Night Football.
The Seahawks were playing the Los Angeles Rams in the Kingdome, and that was lucky for me since a huge Seahawks helmet was painted into the turf and was easily visible during most plays. I would study the television screen for a few seconds, then drop my head and focus on drawing. Look up, look down, draw, look up, look down, draw -- until I had a complete Seahawks logo that I was proud of.
And you know what? I ended up watching the entire game. And I didn’t get bored. Watching the Seahawks became fun after that, no matter if they won or lost.
Many football fans remember the 1985-86 season because of the Chicago Bears, who won the Super Bowl. They were the first NFL team to record a rap song, “The Super Bowl Shuffle.” Incidentally, the Rams, who beat the Seahawks on that special Monday night, ended up losing to the Bears in the NFC championship game that season. Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
Some could say the same thing about this year's Seahawks. Each one of their losses has come with a point spread of a touchdown or less. So close. But this only illustrates how tough it is for them to lose.
Interestingly, I don’t even remember if my brother liked the pillow. I remember seeing it in his room a few times, but I’m pretty sure it was tossed out long ago. Not important.
What’s more important is that I got an ‘A’ in home economics and I am forever a Seattle Seahawks fan.
